The inherited genes from our families determine aging, which affects all of us. The skin, underlying fascia, and muscles lose tone and elasticity to become saggy. These changes bring upon wrinkles around the eyes, droopy corners of the mouth, sagging jaw lines, and “turkey gobbler” deformity of neck. As a result, the person looks tired and aged, resulting in a depressed look. Sometimes, weight loss may produce a similar facial appearance to those of the aging process.

Ideal Facelift Candidates

Males or females, in their 40’s – 70’s may be an ideal candidate for cosmetic facial surgery since there is still some elasticity in skin and, furthermore, bone structure is strong and well-defined. People in there 70’s and 80’s are also good candidates and can expect good results.

Preparing for Facelift or Necklift Surgery

These products increase the risk of bleeding and therefore, complications. You should stop smoking completely 2-3 weeks before surgery as it decreases circulation to the skin flaps, which could result in skin loss and further complications.

You should lose intended weight before surgery, as this allows the surgeon to remove more skin and therefore more beneficial for rejuvenation of face and neck.

You should consider hair cutting and coloration before surgery. This will avoid minor problems of fresh scars and chemicals interacting.

During the Procedure

The surgery is undertaken at day surgery clinic under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia.

During surgery, underlying relaxed tissues are repositioned and held in their youthful position with sutures. The excess amount of skin is removed and sutured around and behind ears. In some patients, only a small incision behind the ear is made, thus avoiding going across the hairline to prevent further scars and hairline deformity.

Bandages are left for 2-3 days. Subsequently, you may shower and shampoo. Sutures are removed around 7-10 days. Bruising may last 2-3 weeks. Facial massage can begin in 2 weeks time to increase the rate of recovery. Make-up can be applied about 1 week after facelift surgery.

Forehead/brow lift, upper and lower lid blepharoplasties, autologous fat injection/lipostructure, laser resurfacing / dermabrasion for upper and lower lip lines can be undertaken at the time of your facial plastic surgery to enhance and rejuvenate the entire face and neck. For younger patients, subtle results are evident while older patients will have a more dramatic outcome.

In select few people, only a neck lift is necessary to improve the neck/jaw lines. Liposuction of the neck, along with repair of relaxed muscle is accomplished. This procedure also can be done along with total face lift under local or intravenous sedative anesthesia. Sutures are removed in 7-10 days time and bruising will settle down in 2-3 weeks time.
