Restylane® is an FDA-approved cosmetic dermal filler that helps restore volume and plumpness to the skin. It can be used to smooth out and soften moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds, as well as for lip enhancement in patients over 21 years old. Restylane dermal filler is composed of stabilized hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in the human body that creates volume and provides elasticity to skin. Unlike rooster-derived hyaluronic acids and bovine collagen products, Restylane is free of animal proteins, which greatly decreases any risk of disease transmissions or allergic reactions for patients. The Restylane-L® formula is also infused with lidocaine for optimal patient comfort during treatment for both facial wrinkles and lip enhancement.
Restylane is injected with an ultra-fine needle directly into the skin where wrinkles and folds are apparent. The procedure generally takes less than 30 minutes to complete. To maximize comfort during the procedure, your doctor may apply an anesthetic to the treatment area. After the initial treatment for correcting wrinkles around the mouth, the Restylane® Regimen involves a follow-up treatment either four and a half or nine months later where only about half the amount of Restylane gel is needed to achieve full wrinkle correction. Restylane®
Restylane for lip enhancement can restore volume to the lips and make them more proportionate to your facial structure and shape. Once your lips are cleansed and prepared for treatment, the Restylane gel will be injected with an ultra-fine needle. The Restylane treatment for lips usually takes less than one hour, and results will be visible immediately.
Restylane does not require patients to have testing done before treatment, but there are some precautions you are suggested to take. Blemishes or infected areas should not be injected with Restylane until the skin is completely healed. Prior to treatment patients should avoid taking supplements and medications that can increase bleeding. Restylane injections may cause an outbreak in patients who have previously had facial cold sores, but your doctor can prescribe medication to reduce the chances of this recurrence. People with serious allergies or bleeding disorders should not use Restylane. Some redness, swelling, soreness, or bruising may occur after treatment but should resolve in less than 7 days in the nasolabial fold areas and in less than 14 days in the lips.
Restylane has been proven to deliver long-lasting results, with studies showing that Restylane effects generally last for about 18 months from the initial treatment of lines at the corners of the mouth. Just one lip treatment with Restylane can provide natural-looking results for up to 6 months.
