Going through pregnancy and nursing can be hard on the body, especially if a woman has multiple pregnancies. The growth and subsequent shrinking of the abdomen can weaken the abdominal wall, leaving the muscles loose and flaccid. Pregnancy can also lead to excess, hanging abdominal skin along with unwanted fat deposits in the abdomen, hips, thighs, and upper arms. Both pregnancy and breastfeeding affect the breasts in significant ways, causing them to swell and then deflate. Often, a woman’s post-pregnancy breasts are deflated and saggy.
A Mommy Makeover is a personalized collection of procedures that improve a woman’s body shape by correcting these issues that are common after pregnancy and nursing. Most often, the Mommy Makeover includes liposuction, a tummy tuck, and breast surgery, specifically breast augmentation and breast lift surgery. Your Mommy Makeover will be customized for you and can eliminate excess skin and fat, tighten your abdominal muscle tone, and make your breasts perkier and fuller.
Ideal candidates for a Mommy Makeover may have one or more of the following issues:
- Sagging breasts
- Loss of breast volume
- Hanging abdominal skin
- Excess fat deposits in the abdomen, hips, thighs, upper arms, or other areas
- Weakened stomach muscles that create a distended-looking stomach
The best candidates are done with childbearing and live a healthy lifestyle. Candidates should have also completed their last pregnancy and all breastfeeding at least six months to one year before pursuing surgery. Candidates who are already near their goal weight typically achieve the greatest results from Mommy Makeover surgery.
Preparing for Your Mommy Makeover
During your consultation, you and your surgeon will discuss your needs and desires for your body shape. A decision will be made regarding which procedures and surgical approaches to include in your Mommy Makeover, and you will be given specific instructions on how best to prepare for the experience. You will need to plan to have someone drive you home afterward, and you will need to take time off work. You will need to stop certain medications and supplements to reduce the risk of bleeding and other surgical complications. If you are a smoker, you will also need to stop smoking at least two to four weeks before your surgery because smoking inhibits healthy healing.
The details of your Mommy Makeover will vary based on which procedures are included. First, you will be placed under general anesthesia, after which the surgeon will perform your surgery. Most Mommy Makeovers include a combination of the following procedures:
- Breast Augmentation: Your surgeon will insert implants into your breasts to restore lost volume and improve breast firmness and fullness.
- Breast Lift: Your surgeon will tighten the lower breast tissues and reshape the breasts to reduce sagging and produce a more youthful appearance.
- Tummy Tuck: Your surgeon will tighten your abdominal muscles, remove excess skin, and recontour your abdomen so that it is firm, flat, and youthful.
- Liposuction: Your surgeon will perform liposuction to permanently remove excess fat from trouble areas such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, and upper arms.
After your Mommy Makeover, you will return home to rest. You will need someone to drive you home and be there to assist you for approximately 24 to 48 hours. Pain medications will be prescribed to alleviate any discomfort. Swelling can persist for up to several weeks. In the first week or two of recovery, you should get a lot of rest and occasionally go on short walks to promote circulation. Patients are often able to return to work and normal activities by two weeks after surgery but should continue to avoid exercise and strenuous activity for at least six weeks. Your results will show a significant improvement in body shape with more youthful and attractive contours. While there will be some scarring, it is easily hidden underneath most clothing and will fade over time. Results can be long lasting if you maintain your healthy lifestyle.
