 As is the case with women, genetics, weight gain, and hormones also affect the male breast. Younger patients with large breasts are often subject to ridicule, resulting in psychological trauma. They also lose self-confidence and morale for not being able to participate in sporting activities. Older patients with prostate and hormonal problems may also experience enlarged breasts. They also become self-conscious and are unable to participate in outdoors activities such as swimming, etc.Before surgery, it is absolutely necessary that a complete evaluation of the hormonal system be undertaken to rule out any tumors in the endocrine glands. It is most advisable to stop smoking, lose weight, and stop all medications containing aspirin 2-3 weeks prior to surgery. The operation is done under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation anesthesia in an outpatient clinic. Liposuction alone or with removal of glandular tissue is undertaken.  Scars are small and inconspicuous.After the operation, a firm dressing and compression garment are worn for 3-6 weeks. Sutures are removed at about 10-12 days post-operatively. Pain is controlled with mild pain medications. Most physical activities, including sports, can be resumed at about 3 weeks. For all males, this procedure is very satisfying and improves the morale, confidence and social outlook. |
