Genetics,
age, body weight, and hormones affect the breasts. Younger women with
large breasts are unable to participate in sporting activities, which
can lead to shyness, loneliness, and other psychological/social problems.
Other problems resulting from large breasts are shoulder grooving,
neck and back pain, abnormal posture, repeated skin infections under
the breasts, and being unable to fit in clothes.
You are advised to stop smoking, stop birth control pills, and stop
all medications containing aspirin for 2-3 weeks prior to surgery.
The operation is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient
basis. During the operation, the excess amounts of skin and breast
tissues are removed. The nipple and areola are repositioned at a higher
level and the breast tissue is shaped in a cone-like manner. Scars
can be minimal with newer surgical techniques.
Post-operative
pain is controlled with medications. Drainage tubes, when placed,
are removed upon stoppage of significant drainage. Sutures are removed
at about 2 weeks. A support bra is advised for 6-8 weeks. No strenuous
physical exercises e.g. tennis, golf, swimming, etc. should be undertaken
for 6 weeks.
Breast reduction is a very satisfying procedure in alleviating symptoms
of the neck and shoulder. Breast reduction can also enhance a woman's
appearance by making the breasts more proportional to the rest of
the body, making her appear thinner, and allowing clothes to fit better.
Insurance coverage may be available in some cases with prior authorization. |
